  • Ardbeg has unveiled its smokiest whisky yet, Ardbeg Hypernova 2022. The new offering joins the recently revealed Ardbeg Fermutation as a Committee Release 2022. “Proper your palate at full force towards the smokiest dram ever to mature into existence at Ardbeg,” says the front label. “Discover fabric-tearingly intense notes of tar, creosote and soot. Venture further into the glass and explore ethereal whispers of aniseed, smoke and dark chocolate.” The back of the label continues, “Possibly the smokiest dram in the world (this one at least), Hypernova possesses a malty magnitude never before experienced. This is a brutally smoky dram that radiates flavour in every direction. Undoubtedly Ardbeg’s smokiest spirit, HN22 is a cataclysmic event for the Distillery. It’s big, it’s intense and it’s pulling palates into a whole new dimension… “Explore notes of pungent peat smoke, aniseed and toasted lavender, while bitter almonds and dark chocolates fuse with curious hints of plasticine and burnt rubber. Descend into a finish that collapses in on itself, before returning to earthy notes of roasted coffee and smoky heather.” All we really know about the Scotch for now is that its bottled at 51% ABV and will be the release for Ardbeg Day 2022. Official tasting notes for Ardbeg Hypernova 2022/Ardbeg committee release 2022: Nose: Powerful, pungent and almost brutal in its intensity, waves of tar, smoke, sea salt and an almost ‘barnyard’ aroma fill the void. Ethereal whispers of fruit, reminiscent of flowering blackcurrants, float into bold bursts of peppermint. Water releases a flurry of more rounded top notes, with a touch of lavender and a slightly chocolaty sensation, before finally arriving at curious hints of plasticine and burnt rubber. Taste: An explosive, peppery mouthfeel launches the palate into a most bizarre juxtaposition of flavors – sweet chocolate, cooling mint, pungent peat smoke, bitter almonds, and then an infinitely long, lingering burst of spices like aniseed and clove.   • Balvenie 21 Year Old Single Barrel 2022 Release The Balvenie Single Barrel Traditional Oak Aged 21 celebrates the unique nature of single cask whisky with no more than 300 hand-numbered bottles drawn from each cask,forming a limited edition never to be repeated as no two casks produce identical single malt. This particular release comes from Cask Number 3837 and laid down in 1999 before bottling in February 2022. Tasting Notes: Balvenie 21 Year Old Single Barrel 2022 Release NOSE Delicate floral vanilla notes up front, followed by brioche, honeycomb, maple syrup and cinnamon in support PALATE Treacle tart with more maple syrup, walnut, mature oak and hints of caraway seed.   • Mortlach 30 Year Old Midnight Malt 2022 Release A limited-edition 30-year-old single malt from Mortlach, Midnight malt was initially matured in a combination of refill American oak and European oak casks, before being finished in Bordeaux wine, Calvados and Guatemalan rum casks, and finally married in custom quarter casks. Aromas of black pepper, garden herbs, sweet oak and vanilla fill the nose, complemented by notes of wine-soaked apples, baking spices, black pepper, mint chocolate and dried fruit throughout the palate.   • Glengoyne Legacy Series Chapter Three The third release in Glengoyne Distillery's Legacy Series, Chapter Three is inspired by Sir Arthur John Tedder, the Exciseman stationed at Glengoyne who helped to define the rules on Scotch whisky. Matured in a combination of hand-selected refill sherry and bourbon casks, it offers aromas of bramble jam, cinnamon, vanilla, apple strudel, pear and raisins that fill the nose, complemented by notes of tarte tatin, sherry-soaked raisins, dried fruit, pineapple, dark chocolate, cream sherry and peppery spice throughout the palate. Here we have the 3rd Legacy Series release celebrates Sir Arthur John Tedder, the Glengoyne exciseman who helped define the whisky as we know it today.   • Limestone Branch Distillery (Lebanon, KY) Master Distiller Stephen Beam has announced the upcoming release of its 2022 Yellowstone Limited Edition Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey. Per the brand, this Lim Ed expression is a meticulously balanced blend of 7-year, 15-year and 16-year aged bourbons selected by Beam and aged in Marsala Superiore casks. It will begin hitting select markets in September. Since 2015, Beam has produced a unique, limited-edition bourbon annually under the Yellowstone brand, which celebrates its 150th anniversary in 2022, along with its namesake national park. For this year’s Yellowstone Limited Edition, Beam selected Marsala Superiore casks to finish select barrels of 7-year-old-bourbon to provide unique tasting notes to complement the extra-aged bourbons comprising this year’s Limited Edition.
