  • GlenDronach Grandeur Batch 11. The GlenDronach Distillery has unveiled Batch 11 in its Grandeur series of whiskies. A 28-year-old Single Malt Scotch hand-selected by Master Blender Rachel Barrie, the GlenDronach Grandeur Batch 11 is made from a small number of rare Pedro Ximénez and Oloroso sherry casks. The GlenDronach Grandeur Batch 11 was matured in sherry casks for nearly three decades and is made to epitomize the brand’s mastery of sherry cask maturation. It embodies their commitment to crafting exceptional, richly sherried Single Malts, using time-honored methods passed down for almost two centuries. On the nose, the whisky is opulent and powerful with notes of sherry, interwoven with dark manuka honey, roasted almond, and walnut. From there, baked plum and ginger captivate the senses, deepening to rustic vintage leather and freshly ground coffee. The palate is intense and full-bodied with dark fruit notes on a base of velvet and fine leather, followed by a crescendo of black cherry and espresso. The finish is richly rewarding, with waves of chocolate, licorice, and walnut. “The GlenDronach Grandeur is an unparalleled range of the finest aromas and character from masterful Spanish oak sherry cask maturation,” said Master Blender Rachel Barrie. “A Single Malt of elegant finesse, this expression offers a symphony of sherry aromatics interwoven with dark manuka honey, roasted almond, and walnut.   • Ardbeg has unveiled its smokiest whisky yet, Ardbeg Hypernova 2022. The new offering joins the recently revealed Ardbeg Fermutation as a Committee Release 2022. “Proper your palate at full force towards the smokiest dram ever to mature into existence at Ardbeg,” says the front label. “Discover fabric-tearingly intense notes of tar, creosote and soot. Venture further into the glass and explore ethereal whispers of aniseed, smoke and dark chocolate.” The back of the label continues, “Possibly the smokiest dram in the world (this one at least), Hypernova possesses a malty magnitude never before experienced. This is a brutally smoky dram that radiates flavour in every direction. Undoubtedly Ardbeg’s smokiest spirit, HN22 is a cataclysmic event for the Distillery. It’s big, it’s intense and it’s pulling palates into a whole new dimension… “Explore notes of pungent peat smoke, aniseed and toasted lavender, while bitter almonds and dark chocolates fuse with curious hints of plasticine and burnt rubber. Descend into a finish that collapses in on itself, before returning to earthy notes of roasted coffee and smoky heather.” All we really know about the Scotch for now is that its bottled at 51% ABV and will be the release for Ardbeg Day 2022. Official tasting notes for Ardbeg Hypernova 2022/Ardbeg committee release 2022: Nose: Powerful, pungent and almost brutal in its intensity, waves of tar, smoke, sea salt and an almost ‘barnyard’ aroma fill the void. Ethereal whispers of fruit, reminiscent of flowering blackcurrants, float into bold bursts of peppermint. Water releases a flurry of more rounded top notes, with a touch of lavender and a slightly chocolaty sensation, before finally arriving at curious hints of plasticine and burnt rubber. Taste: An explosive, peppery mouthfeel launches the palate into a most bizarre juxtaposition of flavors – sweet chocolate, cooling mint, pungent peat smoke, bitter almonds, and then an infinitely long, lingering burst of spices like aniseed and clove.
