  • Ardbeg has unveiled its smokiest whisky yet, Ardbeg Hypernova 2022. The new offering joins the recently revealed Ardbeg Fermutation as a Committee Release 2022. “Proper your palate at full force towards the smokiest dram ever to mature into existence at Ardbeg,” says the front label. “Discover fabric-tearingly intense notes of tar, creosote and soot. Venture further into the glass and explore ethereal whispers of aniseed, smoke and dark chocolate.” The back of the label continues, “Possibly the smokiest dram in the world (this one at least), Hypernova possesses a malty magnitude never before experienced. This is a brutally smoky dram that radiates flavour in every direction. Undoubtedly Ardbeg’s smokiest spirit, HN22 is a cataclysmic event for the Distillery. It’s big, it’s intense and it’s pulling palates into a whole new dimension… “Explore notes of pungent peat smoke, aniseed and toasted lavender, while bitter almonds and dark chocolates fuse with curious hints of plasticine and burnt rubber. Descend into a finish that collapses in on itself, before returning to earthy notes of roasted coffee and smoky heather.” All we really know about the Scotch for now is that its bottled at 51% ABV and will be the release for Ardbeg Day 2022. Official tasting notes for Ardbeg Hypernova 2022/Ardbeg committee release 2022: Nose: Powerful, pungent and almost brutal in its intensity, waves of tar, smoke, sea salt and an almost ‘barnyard’ aroma fill the void. Ethereal whispers of fruit, reminiscent of flowering blackcurrants, float into bold bursts of peppermint. Water releases a flurry of more rounded top notes, with a touch of lavender and a slightly chocolaty sensation, before finally arriving at curious hints of plasticine and burnt rubber. Taste: An explosive, peppery mouthfeel launches the palate into a most bizarre juxtaposition of flavors – sweet chocolate, cooling mint, pungent peat smoke, bitter almonds, and then an infinitely long, lingering burst of spices like aniseed and clove. Finish: Descend into a finish that collapses in on itself with enormous, heavy smoke. Before returning to earthy notes of roasted coffee and smoked heather. Ardbeg Hypernova 2022 $200.00
  • Ardbeg Supernova 2014 Committee Release. A resurrected dram from the past - a new Ardbeg Supernova. The first edition was the peatiest Ardbeg ever and this new release treads the same path. A big whack of smoke with a terrific backbone of fruit and sweetness. Tasting Notes by Quality Liquor Shop NOSE Damp peat and sea spray, sour cream, grass and mint. Straw follows along with coal smoke. PALATE Orange peel leads, with damp earth, peat smoke, liquorice, cherries and bitter dark chocolate. FINISH Sweet smoke, dark chocolate and ash, with lingering menthol. Producer's Tasting Notes: Ardbeg Supernova 2014 Committee Release AROMA Intense zestiness of smoked lemons and pears, lemongrass and pine needles, embedded in a deep, resinuous, sticky waxy base. TASTE Distinctively peppery, spicy and electric. Powerful peppermint, antiseptic lozenges and other familiar, medicinal tones. Dark, dark birch tar intermingles with spicy-sweet chilli flavoured chocolate, while the entire mouth and palate are coated in luscious linseed oil. FINISH Rich flavours of tar, creosote, briar wood, spicy tobacco and liquorice root. Tasting notes by Billy A NOSE Big mulchy peat, with sweetness and brine. There are some soured cream notes, with grassiness and a touch of herbal mint. More savoury herbal notes come in, along with coal smoke and burning seaweed. There's also a bit of straw and hay, adding to a decently farmy background. PALATE Softer than the nose suggests, at least at first. Gentle, sweet orange peel starts, but intensifies with charred peel, damp earth and pungently sweet peat smoke. Liquorice notes sneak in behind, with ferns, TCP and brine. Dark chocolate bitterness is joined by a hint of cherry fruit, with rich loam and wood smoke adding a dryness. FINISH Sweet smoke - both peat and wood - dark chocolate and ashy touches. Menthol hints linger. COMMENT It's quite light in colour, and relatively fresh on the nose, but it's still a bit of a beast. There are darker notes underneath the initial feisty smoke, and a decent amount of complexity. It's Ardbeg looking fondly back on the crazy days of late noughties. Ardbeg Supernova 2014 Committee Release $416.00

  • In 1815, Donald and Alexander Johnston began leasing nearly 1,000 acres of land on the island of Islay. Their intent was to raise and sell cattle on the land and as a result, they began growing barley to be used as feed for their livestock. Following a particularly bountiful harvest, the brothers distilled the excess grains they had grown into whisky, and sold it to the inhabitants of the island. Soon thereafter, the brothers found it more profitable to distill whisky than to raise cattle, and Laphroaig (pronounced La-froyg) Distillery was born. For over a century, the distillery would remain in the hands of one of Johnston's descendants. In 1954, however, Ian Hunter passed away childless and bequeathed the distillery to Bessie Williamson, a secretary that had been working at the distillery for two decades. Hunter was incredibly protective of the distillery — while he slowly revealed its secrets to Williamson after she had earned his trust, Hunter prevented a cooper who was employed at the distillery from publishing his memoirs because they described the workings of the distillery in too great a detail. Laphroaig Single Malt Whisky is one of the most flavorful and intense whiskies made anywhere in the world. During Prohibition, it was one of the few whiskies still legally imported into the United States, as it was considered a medicinal spirit. Laphroaig Single Malt is made from the finest Scottish barley, which is malted at the distillery and smoked over a peat flame. Unlike other distilleries which source peat from the Scottish mainland, the peat used to smoke Laphroaig barley is made from the heather, mosses, and lichens of Islay and adds a distinct iodine-like flavor to the whisky. After the barley has been malted and peated, it is fermented before being twice-distilled through Laphroaig's copper-pot stills. The unique stills have an unusually flat base and flat surfaces, which lends to the overall intensity of the whisky. After the whisky has been distilled, it is aged in seasoned oak barrels, which are re-charred prior to being filled. The re-charring process caramelizes the remaining sugars in the barrel, and adds slightly sweet notes of vanilla and nutty dough to the whisky. Laphroaig 16 gets released on special occasions, starting with their 200th anniversary in 2015. The 2021 edition spent its 16 years in 1st-fill ex-bourbon casks before being bottled at 96 proof. The barrels impart the spirit with a striking bright-gold hue as well as vanilla and spice notes that blend perfectly with Laphroaig's signature peaty, maritime taste profile. Grab a bottle of this limited-edition Laphroaig 16 year old today! About Scotch Scotch is the most popular whisky in the world and is considered the king of them all! There are five whisky regions in Scotland (six if you count the not officially recognized Islands), and each of them produces spirits with unique properties and distinct tasting notes. (The type of grain used determents the type of the scotch.) Malt whisky is made of malted barley, and grain whisky uses other grains like corn or wheat. Most of the time, a whisky is blended from different distilleries hence the name blended scotch, but if a malt whisky is produced in a single distillery, we get something extraordinary called a single malt.
