Part of the 2022 lineup of Diageo's Special Releases, this 12-year-old Lagavulin is a deliciously peaty Islay single malt that was matured in American oak refill and virgin oak casks, then bottled at 114.6 proof. Sweet, spicy, and intensely smoky, it's the iconic Lagavulin, doing what it does best. As our legend goes, one extraordinary day the King of Islay was reborn. A spark of sunlight fell from the sky, and set the land ablaze. When the flames subsided, the scorched earth was veiled in thick smoke. Suddenly, new life rose from the ashes in shimmering feathers of honeyed gold and rich crimson. A regal Phoenix soared above its wings of fire powering the stills of Lagavulin, amplifying its spiced intensity. Lagavulin has long been the home of legends. Its rocky bay was crowned with a castle by Lords of the Isles who ruled long ago. The distillery rose in succession; deeply respected, a king born to power. Made in the birthplace of distilling, this iconic Islay malt is intense and smoky, steeped in history and lore for over two hundred years. In this deep expression from virgin oak and our smokiest reserves, peaty casks lead spice and smoke on their eternal dance with deep sweetness. The smooth, oily start shines with sweet richness, before lemony citrus and sea salt add freshness and an explosion of spice to savour. Mid- palate, the taste becomes more drying, its smoky intensity ever-growing. Great waves of peat wreathe the long, smoky-spicy finish. New-fired, Lagavulin soars to fresh heights of spiced smoke.   • Lagavulin Jazz Festival 2022. This 7 year old Lagavulin Jazz Festival Exclusive, which can only be found on particular ecom channels, is a new edition to the event this year, which we hope will delight fans of the brand who are unable to make it to the Distillery in person. We created this young single malt scotch whisky as a golden opportunity to showcase the vibrancy and life that is found in Lagavulin spirit, and the seven years in cask just hones the flavour and adds a touch of sweetness without dampening any of its vibrancy. It’s a fairly straightforward and uncomplicated whisky! The addition of ex-bourbon casks, along with the bottling at cask strength offers a different perspective on the other well-known Lagavulin whisky flavours. SCOTTISH MASTERCLASS - The Lagavulin 7YO Jazz Festival Exclusive was matured in a mix of refill and ex-bourbonhogsheads. With its breezy confidence, this clean and concise expression of Lagavulin character, the youngest released for many a year, makes a perfect dram for a blowy day. PURE FLAVOUR - This is a very pure and honest expression of Lagavulin, and at cask strength it’s a particularly intense and flavoursome dram. The taste is lightly sweet, rounded and citrus-fruity while also notably salty. Then smoky flavours are coming through, growing more and more, as threads of pungent wood smoke lead straight to white pepper heat late on. SERVE SUGGESTION - Fresh, clear and simple; a fine outdoors dram, preferably enjoyed on the beach, accompanied by fresh oysters. Best served neat in a whisky glass, bringing out some peaty-smoke, when you add a touch of water. GIFTING IDEA - A wonderfully exclusive gift to any whisky-enthusiast, who enjoys an intense, flavoursome single malt scotch or who couldn't make it in person to the distillery's own Jazz Festival 2022. Lagavulin fans will want to play this one over and over. TASTING NOTES Body Light to medium. Nose A mild nose with light prickle despite the strength. The top-notes are both maritime, suggesting a briny, fresh sea breeze with a trace of iodine, and citric, backed by a chalky mineral note on a faintly medicinal base, with little peat-smoke so far.... though adding a drop of water soon brings up that subject! Palate At natural strength, a smooth and gently oily texture. The taste is lightly sweet, rounded and citrus-fruity while also notably salty, then smoky, growing more and more so, as threads of pungent wood smoke lead straight to white pepper heat late on. Water softens and calms the flow; the balance now is poised between softer sweetness and ever-present smoke. Finish Quite long, smoky and drying, as more than a little of the spicy heat entwines with the smoke in a pleasing and warming finale. Similar with water, when there is a mouth cooling aftertaste.
