  • Lagavulin 12 Year Old Special Releases 2022. Part of the 2022 lineup of Diageo's Special Releases, this 12-year-old Lagavulin is a deliciously peaty Islay single malt that was matured in American oak refill and virgin oak casks, then bottled at 114.6 proof. Sweet, spicy, and intensely smoky, it's the iconic Lagavulin, doing what it does best. As our legend goes, one extraordinary day the King of Islay was reborn. A spark of sunlight fell from the sky, and set the land ablaze. When the flames subsided, the scorched earth was veiled in thick smoke. Suddenly, new life rose from the ashes in shimmering feathers of honeyed gold and rich crimson. A regal Phoenix soared above its wings of fire powering the stills of Lagavulin, amplifying its spiced intensity. Lagavulin has long been the home of legends. Its rocky bay was crowned with a castle by Lords of the Isles who ruled long ago. The distillery rose in succession; deeply respected, a king born to power. Made in the birthplace of distilling, this iconic Islay malt is intense and smoky, steeped in history and lore for over two hundred years. In this deep expression from virgin oak and our smokiest reserves, peaty casks lead spice and smoke on their eternal dance with deep sweetness. The smooth, oily start shines with sweet richness, before lemony citrus and sea salt add freshness and an explosion of spice to savour. Mid- palate, the taste becomes more drying, its smoky intensity ever-growing. Great waves of peat wreathe the long, smoky-spicy finish. New-fired, Lagavulin soars to fresh heights of spiced smoke.   • Ardbeg Supernova 2014 Committee Release. A resurrected dram from the past - a new Ardbeg Supernova. The first edition was the peatiest Ardbeg ever and this new release treads the same path. A big whack of smoke with a terrific backbone of fruit and sweetness. Tasting Notes by Quality Liquor Shop NOSE Damp peat and sea spray, sour cream, grass and mint. Straw follows along with coal smoke. PALATE Orange peel leads, with damp earth, peat smoke, liquorice, cherries and bitter dark chocolate. FINISH Sweet smoke, dark chocolate and ash, with lingering menthol. Producer's Tasting Notes: Ardbeg Supernova 2014 Committee Release AROMA Intense zestiness of smoked lemons and pears, lemongrass and pine needles, embedded in a deep, resinuous, sticky waxy base. TASTE Distinctively peppery, spicy and electric. Powerful peppermint, antiseptic lozenges and other familiar, medicinal tones. Dark, dark birch tar intermingles with spicy-sweet chilli flavoured chocolate, while the entire mouth and palate are coated in luscious linseed oil. FINISH Rich flavours of tar, creosote, briar wood, spicy tobacco and liquorice root. Tasting notes by Billy A NOSE Big mulchy peat, with sweetness and brine. There are some soured cream notes, with grassiness and a touch of herbal mint. More savoury herbal notes come in, along with coal smoke and burning seaweed. There's also a bit of straw and hay, adding to a decently farmy background. PALATE Softer than the nose suggests, at least at first. Gentle, sweet orange peel starts, but intensifies with charred peel, damp earth and pungently sweet peat smoke. Liquorice notes sneak in behind, with ferns, TCP and brine. Dark chocolate bitterness is joined by a hint of cherry fruit, with rich loam and wood smoke adding a dryness. FINISH Sweet smoke - both peat and wood - dark chocolate and ashy touches. Menthol hints linger. COMMENT It's quite light in colour, and relatively fresh on the nose, but it's still a bit of a beast. There are darker notes underneath the initial feisty smoke, and a decent amount of complexity. It's Ardbeg looking fondly back on the crazy days of late noughties.   • The 2022 release of Ardbeg 25 Year Old is a smoky single malt with layers of sweetness that was matured in ex-bourbon barrels and bottled in 2021. Aromas of cream, smoke, peppermint, toffee, fennel, pine resin, earthy bonfires and ripe bananas fill the nose, complemented by notes of white pepper, sherbet lemons, candied apples, oranges, pears, tar, carbolic soap, creamy toffee, aniseed, rich smoke and antiseptic throughout the palate. The newest and also oldest whisky to be released to Ardbeg's core range. This supreme expression proves unequivocally that age cannot tame Ardbeg’s raw smoky power. But it can yield some of the most complex and majestic flavours ever to burst forth from the Islay based distillery. Bottled from incredibly rare casks filled during some of the Distillery’s darkest days, this is Ardbeg at its most intricate, balanced and beguiling.
